LECTURE ON HORTICULTURE
■An instructive lecture in connection with the , Brooklyn • Horticultural Society was given on Tuesday in Waldie's Hall, Brooklyn, by «Mr ' G. J. M'Kenzie, Superintendent of City Reserves. Mr' Jackson, president of the society, occupied the chair, and there was a large attendance ! Mr ' M'Kenzie confined his attention to ro;;e culture, and observed that his 'experience had been that horticulture was more advanced in the South Island than in the North, where it was followed by the few. The lecturer dealt with the propagation, the general features of roses, and their' culture, as grown for exhibition and decoration purposes. It was essential. to successful rose culture that they should be grown in open spaces, away from other plants. A demonstration was given, and also some advice regarding pruning, bedding, and the selection of suitable kinds of plants,
