HOUSING MATTERS
Information. regarding several aspects of the housing question was given in the House of Representatives yesterday in reply to questions. Borough councils are*already empowered to lend money to workers to build homes on their own sections, and legislation wilt be introduced this session to enable councils to borrow money for the purchase of land to build on. Referring to reported New South Wales proposals to prevent ejectment of tenants unless the landlord finds another house for the tenant. Sir William Herries stated in reply to Mr. P. Praser: "If this suggestion were to be carried out it might entail more hardships than benefits. The expediency of introducing legislation, as suggested, is therefore doubtful."
Answering a question by Mr. Mitchell regarding the "farming" of houses, Sir William Herries said, "Probably the existing rent-restriction law applies to such a case, and it is suggested that the tenants concerned should ask the Inspector of Factories, pursuant to section 19 oT the War Legislation Act, 1917, to have the standard rent of the house fixed."
