(UNITES FRE33 ASSOCIATION.—COPYRIGHT.) A fire at Hoskings and Company's drapery establishment in Sydney caused damage to the extent of £10,000. Sir Thomas Mackenzie, on behalf of the' New Zealand Government, gave a largely-attended reception to Sir. James Allen, at the Hotel Victoria. A Brisbane message states that Lieutenants Parer and M'lntosh have passed Powell Creek and are flying strongly. It is a-eported by a Sydney message that the Australian' Mutual Provident Society is investing £1,000,000 in the new peace loan, making the society's total in the various loans £9,680,000. Owing to inability t< float a loan in London, the Queensland Government is unable to proceed with its scheme for settling several thousand soldiers on the land, and the establishment of State iron and steel works. The fifteenth meeting of the Australasian Association for the Advancement of Science will open at Hobart on sth January With the exception of a cooperative meeting held with the Biitish Association in 1914, this will be the first held since 1913. It is 'expected that delegates will be.present from all parts of Australasia. ' Liquor smuggling into the United States from Canada has reached such proportions that it has developed into a large illegal traffic in other commodities (states a New York message). The Customs service ie wholly inadequate to meet the situation. A small army is essential to patrol isolated spots on the coast, where smuggling from incoming ships is carried on, and the frontier regions. ' The Sydney City Council has passed » resolution in favour of a municipal undertaking to reduce the cost of funerals. The prospect of a strike of the New South Wales coal-miners is greatly perturbing Victoria, as industries are keenly feeling the coal shortage. Factories have to use half brown coal, and have no reserve;*. War gratuities issued in Australia to the end of July amounted to £12,500,000. Two millions' worth have bee/i cashed. *ihe Italian Government has invited Brigadier-General Ramaciotti, of theAustralian Army, to address the principal Italian Chambers of Commerce on Australian resources and industries.. General Ramaciotti will also attend a meeting of the Council of the British Chamber of Commerce in Italy, at Leghorn, in October. The Mexican Embassy in Washington ha* announced that troops have been despatched to Lower California foi" a campaign to subdue a rebel governor. Fighting is expected in a week. Chinese and Japanese residents will maintain I neutrality.
