A SQUEEZE ON POLAND

Journalistic tipsters are giving themselves a wide scope in the matter of Poland. The Daily Mail now skys that the Soviet Government, instead of obstinately insisting upon dealing directly with Poland, will agree to a London Conference as suggested by the Allies, on condition that General Wrangel, the South Russian thorn in the Bolsheviks' sidej is abandoned by the Allies. The stipulation bears a traitorous appearance, and if Wrangel were surrendered there would still be no guarantee that the Soviet Government would keep faith. The personal authority of Mr. J. L. Garvin is behind a statement that there is imminent danger of a junction between the Germans and Bolsheviks. Admittedly, Poland could not survive a Bol-shevik-German squeeze; and the Petit Parisien even suggests that, in order to enlist the Germans against the Soviet forces, Britain may even be prepared to pay the price of a restitution of Germany's old eastern frontier j which would mean that Poland would lose Posen and the corridor to the sea at Danzig. This suggestion can hardly be credited, because it means the emasculation ,of Poland and the crippling of the Polish policy. Such a price would surely be too high to pay for German aid, particularly when the Allies can coerce Germany per medium of the armies on the Rhine. The situation is delicate, and the reports are likely to be confused and conflicting.
