Mr. E. Page, S.M., presided at the Magistrate's Court to-day. Matthew Watt was fined the amount of his bail (£1), for a second offence of drunkenness, within the statutory ■period of six nlonths. Mary Bnrgoyne . was convicted on a charge of being, an idle' and disorderly person, and was given a last chance to lead a respectable life, being ordered to come up for sentence when called upon within twelve months. A prohibition order was issued against her. Andrew M'Kendry was fined 10s for drunkenness, the alternative being fixed at 48 hours' imprisonment, and was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called ut)on within twelve months upon a charge of having begged alms in Lambton-quay. B. B. Pledger, an ex-employee on the Railway, was fined £1, with 17s costs, for having used insulting and abusive language to a superior officer at Thorndon Station. The offence was committed while the man was under- the influence ci liquor. J. T^ Foley, a barman at the Carlton Hotel, iwas fined &'& and costs, for having permitted "shouting." P. F. Anderson and A. Lundi were each fined £2 and coats for having been on the premises of the Wellington Hotel during prohibited hours. Peter Antoni, an Italian, was convicted and ordered to pay 7s costs upon a charge of having failed to register under the Aliens Act. A young man named T. Reynolds, who had unwisely endeavoured to explain his presence on the premises of' a city hotel late at night by falsely stating that he was a, boarder at the hotel, was fined. £1 with 7s costs. Beyond the fact that accused had made a, false statement, said Sub-Inspector Emerson, there was nothing against him as he had called at the hotel on his way from a. dance, in company with a friend, who was actually a boarder at the.hotel. G. A. Keily, the owner of a bull-dog, which attacked and severely bit a horße, near the Taranaki-street Wharf some days ago, was fined £1 with £1 7s oasts. [ Percy and Reuben Mansfield pleaded guilty to the theft of a length of light railway iron, valued at about 10s, the property of John Bernard Hickmott. It was stated by the police that all. three men were monumental masons, and that when Hickmott missed the iron he questioned the others, and was told that they had seen nothing of the iron. Subsequent inquiries, however, led to the charges being laid against the Mansfields. Each defendant was fined £2. A young man named Digby Ranfurly Andrews was charged with having attempted to commit suicide by cutting his throat with a razor, but tho Sub-Inspector stated that Andrews had done no serious damage to himself. It appeared that the man had gone home under the influence^ of liquor, and after'a dispute with his mother had taken a razor and inflicted a 1 slight cut in his throat. Andrews stated that he was drunk at the time and knew very little of the matter. A prohibition order was issued against him, and he was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon within twelve months. An order was made that a, dog owned by S. Phillips should be kept "under proper control," muzzled when free in the day-time and chained up at night. The dog had bitten a child, but was valued by. its owner as a watchdog. (Proceeding.) At Mount Cook Police Station this morning a short Court sitting was held, Mr. W. H. Coy, J.P.. presiding. William M'Lean, for drunkenness (a second offence) was fined iOs or 48 hours' imprisonment. Two first offending inebriates were convicted and discharged, and one first offender who did not appear was fined 10s, or in the alternative 48 hours' imprisonment.

The City Council sat till 11.40 in committee last night, and adjourned in committee until Wednesday evening next. Mr. A. T.
