THE HOUSING ACT

"UNSATISFACTORY WORDING."

"That the attention of the Prime Minister be drawn to the unsatisfactory wording of the Housing AM, 1919, part V., section 51 (f), in that it does not make provision for the purchase of land to erect dwellings (or of buildings already erected), and that he be asked to have the Act amended and altered in that direction," was the text of a motion passed by the Pahiatua County Council and placed before the Makara County Council to-day with a request for support. It was pointed out by Mr. W. L. Beech that while the object was to increase the housing, that portion of the motion relating to the purchase of buildings already erected would not tend to make the position easier. "It is not in accordance with the purpose of the Act," ho said, "and its adoption would lead to abuse." The council decided to support the Pahiatua proposal insofar as it referred to the purchase of land on which to erect dwellings, but could not see its way clear to agree to the other portion of the. request.
