MR. H. G. MILLER SELECTED.

The Rhodes Scholar Selection Committee, consisting of His Excellency the Governor-General, the Earl of Liverpool (chairman), Sir Robert Stout (Chancellor of the New Zealand University Senate), Sir Worley Bassett Edwards (representing the judiciary), and Professors J. P. Gabbalt (Canterbury), T. A. Hunter (Victoria), G. E. Thompson (Otago), and Maxwell Walker (Auckland), met this morning to select a Rhodes Scholar in the place of Mr. H. A. Mackenzie, who has relinquished the Rhodes Scholarship for the present year, as holder of thfi N.Z.E.F. Scholarship in Trance. There were two candidates, one from Auckla-nd University College and the other from 'Victoria College. The committee, after carefull consideration, selected Mr. Harold Gladstone Miller, of Victoria College. Tho successful candidate is aged 22, and was educated at Masterton District High School from 1905 to 1915, and at Victoria College from 1916 to 1920. He graduated in 1918, winning a senior scholarship in Economics, and passed his M.A. degree last year with first-class honours in philosophy, and was awarded a Jacob Joseph Research Scholarship and a frea passage to England. In athletics he has distinguished himself throughout as a footballer, being captain of tho Wairarapa Public Schools fifteen in 1914-15, Wairarapa representative in 1916, and North Island University representative m 1920. He was also a member of the cricket eleven. In the ."social activities of college life he was runner-up in the Tlunket Medal contest of 1918, president of the Christian Union in 1919, and sub-editor of The Spike in 1920, besides taking a prominent part in the preparation of the college extravaganzas.
