BUTTER-FAT PRICES

An inquiry has been made as to the equivalent in terms of butter-fat return of the price of Is 6d a gallon at the factory door asked by directors of the Featherston Dairy Company for supplymg milk to the city. An authority states that, reckoning lOilbs of milk to the gallon, with a 4 per cent, butter-fat test, it would require 251b of milk or two and two-fifths gallons to yield lib of butter-fat. This would make the butter-fat return approximately 3s 7d I Ib. Four per cent, is a good average butter-fat test, but milk which gave a lower test would cost the same to city if sold as milk, and would yield more to the producer if the return were considered on a butter-fat basis. A pound of butter sells in bulk from tie factory door at Is sd. The Mayor of Miramar, by advertisement in this. issue, requests persons' in the borough ' who have been without milk to leave their names, addresses, and daily requirements at the Borough Council office.
