CLYDE-QUAY SCHOOL

TO THE EDITOJV

Sir,—Kindly .allow space in which to ask the Education Board to tell the public in general^ and'the very earnestly expectant parents of that vicinity, if any finality has been reached in regard to supplying better permanent accommodation in the near future? Parents in all neighbourhoods ure well within their right to note very seriously the coming school committee elections. Vie must remember to return only those men and women who are broadminded, clear-headed, and up-to-date, prepared to give a great deal of time and attention to bettering the school buildings and their general suitable equipment. Not to do so is an insult to the teachers, and a serious menace to Ih'e wholesome development of our children.—l am, etc., - ISABEL HULBERT.

19th April.

A case was reported at the last meeting of the executive of the Canterbury Returned Soldiers' Association of a deceased soldier's widow who had been refused ■ a pension because she was unable to give evidence of.her engagc-sm.enl to the soldier before he left New Zealand./ As the widow is an English wife, it was pointed out that to produce such proof was obviously impossible. It whs remarked tliat legislation passed last session made provision for disablement pensions to the wives of soldiers who married in England, but that in, the event of the death of the soldier, evidence of a pre-war engagement must be submitted. The position thus created was'that the wife <vas eligible for a pension, while her husband was alive but disabled, but .that she was not entitled In such a pension after his death, when, it was considered, it was reasonable to suppose th.it she would be in even greater need of the assistance. It was decided that the secretary should interview Sir James Allen on the ma-ttei.
