TRADES AND LABOUR
THE COUNCIL'S REPORT.
The Wellington Trades and Labour Council in its annual report states that •although progress had been made, it was not commensurate with what Labour could achieve were it determined to do the best for itself. Although the mortgage on the property had been substantially reduced during the year, the sum devoted to that purpose was to 6 modest to be considered wholly satisfactory.' That, however, should be no excuse for pessimism, but should rather be an incentive to do better next time. As the yearly statement'disclosed, the revenue derived from rents had increased, but until thd accommodation for offices and meeting rooms was extended, there could, b& no-further increase- of revenue from this source. • ■ ■
During 'the year the Dairymen's, Drivers', and Gas-workers' Unions had become affiliated with the council. These embraced some six hundred unionists.
The report adds.:—"The council continues to take a consistently active part in most of the movements that affect.the moral' and social life of tho people. Amongst theae may be mentioned the Social Welfare Committee, the Ptepatria^ tion Committee, the Railway Goods Transit Committee, the High Cost and Scarcity of Coal, and the Housing Problom. The ' "council very wisely adheree to its affiliation with the Workers' Educational Association. It recognises that the latent possibilities for good of such an association lire not easily calculated. The efforts of that devoted band of educationists deserve the heartiest commendations, not only of the council, but of the whole community."
