THE COUNCIL'S SCHEME

Beporfcing to the City' Council last evening,.the City Housing, Superintendent (Mr. B, M'Kenzie) stated in regardto municipal houses under construction that since the last fortnightly report :— ''We have been able to secure sufficient doors for four houses. Through the good offices of • Councillor Bennett, we have been able to place an order for an\additional SO doors. We are now awaiting the arrival of scrim, which is being shipped from Auckland, and hope on receipt of same to complete the first fcwo houses. 3

Councillor Wright stressed the great difficulty experienced in getting material, and owing to this fact there-., were none of the houses yet completed, though it was hoped they would be very soon. He desired to thank Councillor Bennett for his valuable assistance.

•Councillor C. Chapman said there was a growing demand for the city houses, and there was no doubt of their superiority over others. (Hear.hear.) In the long run they would redound to the credit of the city. Councillor P. Fj<aser pointed to the necessity for due attention being paid to the conditions of many of the dwellings tenanted under the stress of present conditions, and urged that the council should fully saddle itself with the responsibility invested in local bodies in this direction by the Government. Councillor E. A. Wright suggested that the difficulty of obtaining material! was responsible for want of repairs. If concrete examples of neglect' by landlords to effect repairs were given they could deal with them. . . ,

Councillor J. Glover remarked that Councillor Wright had been away, and probably did not know that a'large number of notices for repairs had been sent out.

Further discussion followed, and the report was adopted.
