The Hon.* D. Guthrie will spend the Easter holidays at Feilding, returning to Wellington on Tuesday next. On Tuesday afternoon, Mr. J, H.. Leopard, who has been transferred to the locomotive engineer's office, Petone, was the recipient of several pieces of silverware presented by the members of the staff of the chief mechanical engineer's office. The Hon. W. C..F. Carncross, Speaker of the Legislative Council, is spending a brief period in Wellington after his return from the Parliamentary trip to Samoa. The Public Service Commissioner (Mr. Donald Robertson) will relinquish the duties of his office at the end of April next. With. Mrs. Robertson he intends leaving on 24th May, on the Remuera, for a trip'to England. The Hon. Sir James Allen arrived in Wellington yesterday. Since returning to Auckland from Samoa he lias been visiting Rotorua and other parts of the Auckland district. The Order of the British Empire has been conferred on Major S. J. Bolton, formerly engaged in the accountants' branch of the General Post Office, Wellington. He left New Zealand with the second reinforcements, and is still in London engaged on military duties. The late Mr. Benjamin Hore, whoso remains were interred in Karon Cemetery on Friday, was a noted wrestler on, the West Coast and Otago. For many years he was engaged in quartz mining on the West Coast,, where he contracted miners' phthisis, from which he diedi after a long illness. He was 71 yearsl of age. - - Mr. W. J. Gardner, the retiring Town Olerk at Petone, was on Tuesday the recipient of two presentations, the first, a. framed enlarged photo of the whole of the borough officials, from the office staff; and the second, a suit case, from the whole of the borough employees. The presentations were in each case mado' by the Mayor (Mr. J. W. M'Ewan). r' Mr. C. H. Earwaker, Methodist minitser of Porirua, who has been; transferred to the Paraparaumu church cirsuit, was farewelled at the Tawa Flat Methodist Church yesterday afternoon. On behalf of the residents of Takapu and Tawa .Flat, Mr. I. E. Taylor presented Mr. Earwaker with a gold- , mounted pocket wallet, suitably engraved, and containing a substantial sum of money. ■'.-'' : An appreciation of the work of ,the late Mr. G. :Allport has been received by the Minister of Marine (Hon. Donaldson, who has been appointed to the position of district manager for the National Mutual Life Association at the Wanganui branch office,' leaves on Monday next to take-up his new duties. At a farewell ceremdny held at the New Zealand Head Office to-day, Mr. F. W. Nicholson, J.P., General Manager for New. Zealand, congratulated Mr.' Donaldson on his appointment, and on behalf of the staff presented him' with a case of pipes and tobacco pouch,-and a,handsome tea service for Mrs. Donaldson. He referred to the many good qualities of the recipient, and wished him every success in his new appointment. The accountant,' Mr. E. B. Woodhead, also expressed the good wishes of the, staff, and Mr. E. Dixon, ex-accountant, spokt on behalf of the travelling representatives. '

Mr. Frank H. Taylor, Assistant^Controller of the Imperial Supplies Department, has been appointed to an important position in the Gisborne •Fanners' Frozen Meat and Mercantile Co., Ltd. He will leave Wellington for Gisborno o« 22nd April. Mr. Taylor's mercantile career in."Wellington included service with the N.Z. and African Steamship > Co. Then hef was appointed manager of the Ship.ping. Department and Lloyd's agent .for Dalgety and Co., Wellington. He was "lent" by Dalgety and Co. to the Government'on the institution, , early in 1915, of the Imperial Government Meat Supply Department, which ultimately developed into the Imperial Supplies Department. At the time this appointment was made, Mr. Taylor had the assistance of an > accountant, clerk, and typist, and a'messenger. With the growth of the activities of the Department and its expenditure to date of over £152,000,000, the staff had grown to over sixty persons in the office, with wool and skin valuers >nd inspectors of fellmongeries and scouring works in addition. Mr. Taylor took a keen interest in. all sports, and was a member of the Star Boating Club, Wellington Football Club, and at one time on the executive of the Wellington Boxing Association.
