Mr. E. Page, S.M., dealt with police cases at the Magistrate's Court to-day.

Richard Hammondi Sydney Wilkes was convicted ,on a charge of helpless drunkenness. He asked that he should be sent to Roto Roa in order that he might straighten up. He had, he said, "gone through" a. cheque for £90 recently. The Magistrate committed him to the Inebriates' Home for twelve months, and ordered him to pay £2 10s medical and other expenses incurred since his arrest.

Herbert Maurice Flynn was also convicted of having been found in a state of helpless drunkenness, and was ordered to pay a fine of 10s and 15s medical expenses. ALLEGED THEFT AT LOWER HUTT

; James William Batie and David Patrick Rea were charged at the Lower Hutt Police Court this morning before Messrs. G. A. Chapman and W. C. James, J.P.s, with having on or about 29th March stolen two shovels, two picks, and ono file, the total value of £1 16s 6d, the property of the Lower Hutt Borough Council. On the application of Constable R. Holmes, a remand was granted' till 7th April, on the ground'that other charges were pending against the accused. Bail was allowed each of the accused- for the sum of £10 and a surety each for. £10. The accused are in partnership, firewood cutting at Belmont, and it is alleged that the-articles were taken, from a job on the Western Hutt-road, and - were found in their cjtnp. . '
