WAIHI STRIKE
CONFERENCE OPENS,

A conference, arranged through . the Prime Minister in the hope of bringing about a settlement of tho strike of engineers and the Waihi Miners' Union, commenced this afternoon with Mr. P. Hally as chairman. The parties to the dispute were represented by four heads of mine-owners, four 'members, of the Miners' Union, including Mr. O'Rourke, president of the Coal and Gold-Miners' Federation, and four members of the engineers, including Mr. Elston, organiser, The proceedings wore not open' to- th« greas.
