WAR MEMORIAL CONCERT.

The Empire Theatre, Petoire, was crowded last night when the first of a, series of entertainments to raise funds for the erection of a memorial to the fallen soldiers was given. The Maori Ohoir, which is already very favourably known, to the Petone public, were responsible for the first part of the programme, and the efforts of the members met with distinct approval. During an, interval the Mayor (Mr. J. W. M'Ewan), on behalf of the Memorial Committee, thanked the performers for their delightful entertainment, and also the residents for their attendance, and .asked for their patronage at future concerts. Judging from the support already extended, he felt confident the committee would attain what it desired. The programme was as follows :—Overture, Petone Municipal Band; tableau representing a war episode; Maori chant, Choir; song, "Aegean Sea," Miss H. Love; poi dance, Maori children; sailors' hornpipe, Puketapu; selection, "Eileen Alannah," Choir; Maori liaka, Company; duet, "Anzac," Pollock Brothers; Highland dance. Miss Daisy M'Lellan; song, "Oh, Frenchy !". Miss Helen M'Lellan; song, "Rose of Picardy," Miss Upton; humorous song, Mr. Shelton. To-night at the Empire Theatre the "Cheer-oh Girls" from Wellington will provide the entertainment, and , patrons are assured of something quite apart from the average.

The Wellington Amateur Operatic Society has decided to produce this year, under the direction of Mr. Tom Pollard, the well-known opera, "La Fille dv Tambour Major," which, some twenty years ago, was played throughout New Zealand by the Pollard Opera Company.
