NEW ZEALAND REPRESENTATION

CAMPAIGN FOR FUNDS OPENED.

The Olympic Games Council of New' Zealand met last night to consider what action the Dominion is to take in regard to tho forthcoming games. Mr A. A. Marryatt presided, and others present j were Messrs. J. E. Staples, B. St. J. Beere, B. R. Keesing, A. Davies, G. S. Hill, Eldridge, and B. A. Guise, secretary. The meeting was fully representative of the various sports. The secretary reported that the New Zealand Boxing Association had informed him that, owing to the expense of sending a team to Brisbane in August, it would not be ablo to help financially. The New Zealand Amateur Rowing Association had expressed satisfaction at the renewal of the committee's activity, and suggested that D C. Hadfield should be nominated as a rowing representative. The Swimming Association urged the claims of Miss Violet Walrond, of Auckland, Miss G. Shand, of Christchurch, and C. Atkinson, of phristchurch, to represent tho . Dominion in swimming events. The Chairman expressed the opinion that it was desirable to send a team to ' represent New Zealand at the Games to be held in Antwerp in August. He estimated the cost at £300 for each competitor, and said that probably a team of live might be sent There would be no time to lose, however, if the scheme was to be successful. He moved, and Mr. Hill seconded,; that steps be taken to have New Zesland represented this year. Mr. Keesing supported the idea that a small team of champions be sent to compete. The motion was carried. The Chairman said the nominations received so far included:—H. E. Wilson, hurdler; Lindsay and Davidson, sprinters ; Hadfield, rower; Mis? Walrond, Miss Shand, and C. Atkinson, swimming. On his suggestion the meeting adopted a motion asking the newspapers throughout the Dominion to open subscription lists for the purpose of raising the necessary funds to send a team. It was also resolved to wait upon the Government to ask that the amount raised be subsidised. Representatives were chosen to organise the funds in the various centres, and it was d«cided to ask all clubs to organise shilling funds.
