YACHTING

RACE FOR TURNBULL CUP,

... The weather conditions for the sailing of the Tuinbull Cup ■; race on Saturday afternoon, under the auspices of the Port Nicholson Yacht Club, were quite good. A; light northerly wind arrived just .a little before the boats got under way. There was only a moderate sea, and from start to finish the race presented a spectacle which roused enthusiasm. The race was followed by the harbour ferry steamer Duchess, which had its decks crowded with spectators, of whom, it was noticeable, there were almost as many women as men. The course, about sixteen miles, was from Clyde-quay, outside Jerningham Buoy to Pinnacle Buoy, off Seatoun, Koro Koro Buoy, Jerningham, and back to the starting point. There were nine competitors who got away at •3 p.m. to a flying start, most with leading jibs and gaff topsails set. At Jerningham the Waitangi ;was slightly in the lead, Marangi being close up to her big rival, i Waitangi . immediately set her spinnaker, but the wind was too much from the westward.. This prevented her making Pinnacle without jibing, and Marangi was the first to round the mark. Kotiri: rounded about 70 seconds later, followed at about the same interval by Rona, Ailsa, Wanderer, and Viola. The wind had by this time freshened, and on the beat up to Koro Koro the Waitangi moved into the lead, with the'Marangi and Kotiri in,close attendance, with Wanderer, excellently handled, coming along a little further behind. From that out the race was well sailed and interesting. .Waitangi crossed the line at 5.27 p.m., Marangi 5.29.55, Kotiri, 5.34.45, Rona 5.39.15, Atalanta 5:42.16, Wanderer 5.42.50, Ailsa 5.44.38, Viola 5.55.25, and Wairere 5.56.9.
