PUBLIC WORKS PAY

LABOURERS TO GET ONE SHILLING EXTRA

STRIKE OF TUNNEL WORKERS

A message received by The Post states that the men employed by the Public Works Department on the tunnel works at Huarau, North Auckland, downed tools to-day as a protest against the attitude of the Department in regard to wages. The complaint has been a longstanding one, and there have been indications of i late that an increase was at last imminent. It is understood that, by a curious coincidence, the matter was under the consideration of Cabinet this morning, and that it was decided to raise the ordinary labourer's wage by Is a day; that is, from 12s to 13s a day.
