VICE-REGAL.
His Excellency the Governor-General and party arrived at the Bluff by the Tutanekai yesterday afternoon, and went on to Invercargill. Later a public reception was accorded the party at the railway station by the Mayor. The Governor received an address from the city. In the evening a civic welcome was given at the Town Hall. The party was to leave this morning for Queenstown.
Mr. Alonzo Dwan, who was dangerously ill in Auckland from pneumonic influenza last week, has taken a turn for the better, and is now recovering.
Mr. D. Morrison, chief clerk of the Christchurch State Fire Office, has been appointed branch manager of North Wellington district, with headquarters at Palmerston North.
Councillor C. J. B. Norwood left Wellington by the Riverina yesterday for Sydney. At Sydney he will join the Sonoma and proceed to the United States, Canada, Great Britain, and Europe. He expects to be absent from the Dominion for about six months.
Fifty-eight years in the employ of one firm is claimed by the Auckland Observer to be a record for Auckland, if not for New Zealand.. Mr. Alexander Smith, who has just retired from a position on the staff of Leighton and Son, Ltd., joined the firm in 1860, when only eleven years of age.
Mr. 0. Borer, 8.E., who was awarded an Engineering Travelling Scholarship, recently left New Zealand for Europe and America. Mr. Borer, who is 24 yeaTS of age, had a distinguished career at the Te Aro School and Wellington College, culminating in a Turnbull Scholarship at Victoria College, and the gaining of the Engineering Exhibition at Canterbury College.
