BRICKMAKING
SCOPE FOR MUNICIPAL ENTERPRISE.
In accordance with the desire of the City Council, the City Engineer (Mr. W. H. Morton) is making full inquiry while in England regarding brick-making plants. Commenting on the proposal that the City Council should engage in brick.making the Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) stated to a Post reporter to-day that it was certainly worthy,-of the council's attention. The council had to consider not only the question of supplying its own requirement, but the requirements of the open market. Brick-mak-ing had undergone great changes in recent years, and several yards in the vicinity of the city had been worked out. It was a matter for the council to consider seriously in connection with the city's needs. It was likely that the demand for bricks during the next few yeans would be very heavy. If private enterprise failed to meet the demand the City Council must step into the breach, and effectively grapple with the situation by providing works capable of meeting all local requirements.
