MEETING OF BOROUGH COUNCIL

The fortnightly meeting of the Lower Hutt-Borough Council . was held last evening. Present: Mr. K. P. Rishworth (Mayor), Councillors '\Villoughby Knight, W. Meldram, J. Mitchell, A. Macaskill, W. T. Cotton, W..8. Hardy, A. J. West, and J. A. Hobbs,

The Borough Solicitor, Mr. E. P. Bunny, proposed that conditional exemption from dedication be granted in regard to the widening of Bridge-street in front of Mrs. Moburg's property. On the motion of Councillor Macaskill, seconded by Councillor Cotton, this course was adopted.

The Acting-Town Clerk, Petone, advised that the matter of gas presswe had been referred to the Pet-one Gas Committee. ■ ' '

A subsidy of £122.15s Id was received from the tinder-Secretary of Internal Affairs in rega.rd to the Peace celebrations. The Prime Minister reported that the Board of Trade had made an investigation into the accounts and . management of Petone Gasworks, and that he considered that the matters in dispute betweon the two councils were capable of settlement by a conference of the two bodies., . .

The Secretary of the Board of Trade forwarded a copy of the report of Mr. Kennedy on the Petone Gasworks, and! suggested that after consideration of same the Board of Trade would be glad to meet a deputation from the council to discuss the matter, with, a view to a settlement..

It was decided that the council had no power to take over.a drainage reserve as a publio right-of-way from the Tirohanga, Estate Company. No. 1 Committee reported as follows in,regard to the filling of the vacancy caused by the resignation of Ranger and Inspector Mills r (1) That the offices of ranger and inspector be separated. (2) That the position of inspector be offered to" Mr. W...L. Smith, yard clerk and storeman, at his present salary. . (3) That the latter's position bo offered to Mr.VO. H. Breach, meter reader, at his present salary. -(4) That applications be called for the position of ranger at £2 per week plus driving fees, and for ■meter-reader at a salary not exceeding £3 6s per week. The-report was adopted. . ■ '

The Footpaths Committee recommended that the following footpaths receive attention : Thirty chains of the Mainroad from the V.I.C. to Black Creek; 25 chains Waterloo-road, north side, from Cornwall-street to about lot 35, section 29, and 6i chains Knights-road, east side, from Steven's-street to Laing's-road, and to top dress tig) bicycle tracks in Woburn and Waterloo roads. The report was adopted, Councillors Cotton and Meldrum being, however," of the opinion that the cycle tracks might have ntood over till another year. ENGINEER'S REPORT. The Borough Engineer (Mr. E. A Gumbley), reported that the Main-road from Kings-road to the V.I.C. had been scarified and recambered, - and the same treatment was being given to the portion north of the V.I.C. The work of. erecting the new pumping plant was proceeding satisfactorily. It was important _that after a fire the pumping station should be immediately notified that the necessity for extra pumping had ceased. A reinforced concrete crossing was be-' ing tried, and, if satisfactory, he proposed making it the standard crossing. The cost -would be about 225. Notice to clear ragwort from sections, in Laing'sroad had been attended to.
