AUSTRALIAN SOLDIER'S DEED.
: ■■■■■■: LONDON, -29th September. The first Victoria Cross won in the North.' Russian campaign :.ha3 been awarded to a South Australian, Corporal A.' P.' Sullivan. . After fighting a rear^ guard covering action, his. platoon was compelled to cross the Sheika River by, means of a narrow plank.- Four men fell into the iwater. Corporal Sullivan an-, hesitatingly jumped four times into the water/.-in spite of intense fire, and rescued all the men, who otherwise must ' inevitably have been drowned. His splendid example and heroism inspired all ranks, wfio were at the point of .exhaustion, with the enemy less than a hundred yards distant. Meritorious Service Medals have been awarded the following .two Australians : —Sergeant-Majoi' J. F. Baumgan, 2nd Artillery Brigade ,• Private R. Wood, 2nd Machine Gunners. The awards are in recognition . of- devotion to' duty -during an epidemic among prisoners in camp in Germany.,
