NOTES AND COMMENTS

(El "SIB liASCELOT.")

Captain John Falconer, whose death was announced in tie Evening Post this week, was well known in sporting circles, and was an old member of the Wellington Racing Club. . Kauri King, who has not raced sines the Great Northern Meeting, heads. th« list in the Grey Lynn Hurdles at Avondale. Sir Agnes, who is the cut of a jumper and bred the right way, is in with a. handy impost. ' Bitholia, who was placed on fiv« occasions as a two-year-old, J3 considered the best of the forty-six horses handicapped for the Maiden Plate at Avondale. Next on the. list comes the New South Wales horse'Khublai Khan. He ran second to Finmark in the A. J.C. St. Leger, which was the only occasion he got in the money out of fourteen starts as a three-year-old. The form Kilgour showed at Dannevirke was good enough to give him an excellent chance in the Avondale Guineas, worth 400 soys to the winner, had he been engaged in that event. Oakleigh, winner of the Pakuranga Hunt Cup, is by St. Amans, sire of Gold Kip, fron> Jean, and is half-brother to Red M'Gregor, a Great Northern Steeplechase winner. Some Boy is nicely treated in tno Avondale Cup with 8.9. In the Canterbury Handicap, run on the 6th instant, he- was handicapped at 9.6, Estland 9.11 and Finmark'9.B being the only horses placed above him. A. Downing, who rode Fabriquotte to victory in the Jellicoe Handicap at the Pakuranga Hunt Club's Meeting, is the light weight who won the Takapuna Cup on Windorah. Kilgour was engaged in the Maiden Plate at.Otaki, but, haying won at Dannevirice, is not now eligible. The best of &« others is Motuihi, runner-up to Affectation in the Great Northern Champagne Stakes. He is to go to Wanganui. Other Trentham horses engaged are: Sunburnt, Royal Exchange, Idle-ness,-and Preface. The best of them should get the verdict. Escaped (General Latour—Clare), winner of the Liverpool Handicap at the Pakuranga Hunt Club's Meeting, raced very consistently last season.. He is engaged in the Henderson Handicap at Avondale.

I Mullingar has 81h less in th,» Avondale Cup than when h« won the event named twelve months ago. , Peryolo (full-sister, to First Line) has been jumped at Trent^am recently in company with Cyra, and gave a good display • ;■..•• : Sonnino is being jumped atTrentham,, and may make his first appearance in a hurdle race at Masterton. He is the right cut for hurdle racing if he only •takes kindly to the business. A. M Wright informed me at Dannevirke that he intended to appeal to the Wanganui District Committee against the decision of the Marton Jockey Club in awarding the stakes to Mattock'in the Steeplechase. ', Fabrjquette, winner of the principal event at tho Pakuranga Hunt dub's Meeting, wads well ia the Avondale Cup Troth the same wight (7.2). * Trentham trainers walking their bones to Otaki went by a track through Akatarawa, ,and come out *t Waikanae. Tiaa short cut, it is said, cuts about ten miles off the trip, besides avoiding motor traffic and rough roads. •In connection wfih th« Pakuranga Burnt dub's Meeting, at EUerslie on Saturday last, the usual parade of two-year-olds was held. Most of the youngsters that took part are engaged in the Avondala Stakes, to be run on the 27th inst. Details are appended :—

Lovelight, Bonnie Mabel, and Jolly Princess were picked out as conspicuous, in the early stages from the spreadeagled field, and once fairly in the straight Jolly Princess always appeared to he going nicely among the leadersShe raced past the post about half a length in front of Miss Muriel, who defeated the Potoa-Latona filly known as Potona for second honours. Close behind the placed trio came Lovelight, Lv Con, Nonsense, and Landslide within easy range of each other. The time for the three furlongs was 40sec. The. New Zealand contingent is engaged at the Rosehill Meeting, to be held to-da^. Golden Bubble and Rossini are in the Guineas, nine furlongs. Tannaha is in the Rosehill Handicap, one mile and a-quarter The field engaged in the Spring Stakes, one mile, weight-for-age, includes Gloaming, Sasanof, Spanner, and Surveyor. Panacre, who won the race last, year, and Biplane, who started favourite, and ran unplaced, are also entered.

Martindale, the property at Hastings where Sid Reid intends to set up as a public trainer, is one of the oldest establishments in Hawkes Bay, and will probably be remodelled and renovated before the new occupants go in. It was owned by the late Mr Percy Martin, hence the name, and is situated about a mile from Hastings, and nearly opposite the railway entrance to the course. When the writer visited it, many : years ago, it was looked upon as the premier public training establishment in what was then an important racing centre. The occupants included Tirailleur, who had not at the time made his first public appearance, Lady Florin, a useful mare that won good handicaps.in both islands, The Mute gelding Silence, a game honest bay, that would be worth a lot of money in these days of increased stakes. He won the Wanganui Cup among other, races. And last but not least of a fairly big string was the grey, Soudan. Messrs. J. B. Harcourt and C P. Skerrett being the only nominations for the office of president and vice-president of the Wellington Racing dub, they will be elected unopposed. The four retiring stewards are, Messrs. 0. W. Chilman,, J. G. Duncan, Eric Riddiford, and Dr. H. Gilmer Messrs. J G. W. Brodie, K. D Dunca,n, and Colonel H. ■J. M'Lean have also been nominated, Mid an election will take place. There wiH probably be a i aw onfeidoowned two-year-olds competing in the

Avondale Stakes at the end of ihe month. Mr. A. B. Williams will be represented by a filly by Absurd—■C&rmania named Caricature. Gasbag (Demosthenes—Lady Celia) has also been sent up from Hastings to compete.. The Trentham jockey T. Young has been engaged to ride Sweet Tipperary in the Welter at Otaki.

| The bigger the field the greater the certainty In a field of twenty-eight which contested the Sylvia Park Handicap, War Tank, which had never previously won a race, was' sent out favourite and won. War Tank is owned by Roulston Bros., whose father bred and raced many winners since Record Reign. War Tank is the first progeny of Seadeloria, by Seaton Delaval—^Pretoria, by Cuirassier—Winnie. At the Waikanae Stud the following foalings are announced :—Merrie Margaret (Bezonian —Margarethe), bay colt (since dead), by Kilboy; Peace (The Officer—Content), bay colt to Boniform; Bebe (Bezonian —Bluewater), bay filly to Boniform; Margarethe (Birkenhead — —Chant), bay colt to Boniform; Mistime (Birkenhead —Miss Never), bay filly to Boniform; Lady Jean 11. One of the youngsters which competetf in the two-year-old parade at Ellerslie last Saturday, a filly by Absurd, appeared under the appropriate name of Nonsense. This brings back recollections of a mare bearing the same name that was a well-known performer in the Dominion in the 'eighties. She was a member of the Albany—No Name family, to which Oudeis (an unbeaten two and three-year-old), Disowned (winner of the Canterbury and Great Northern Derbies) and other performers belonged. In the first New Zealand Cup (won by Tasman), the late Hon. W ("ReadyMoney") Robinson started Nonsense and Cheviot, and declared to win with the first-named. "In a great finish she was beaten by a short head by Tasman, ridden by E. Derrett, with whom the owner of Nonsense had a difference of opinion a few days prior to the race. At the Waikanae Stud, Messrs. Dwan. Bros.' Northern Rose (Finland —Rose Shield) has foaled a bay colt by Boni form. The newcomer is a half-brother to Miss De Val, Trentham Rose, and Swanee River
