WELLINGTON-CANTER-BURY RUGBY
APPOINTMENT OF REFEREE.
A correspondent,. "Faithful Servant," writes to The Post as follows :—"I notice in your report of the Wellington Rugby Union's Meeting that the union has decided to.forward certain referees' names to the Canterbury Rugby "Union, ■for them to select a referee to control the Wellington and Canterbury match. May I ask why certain prominent referees have been passed over by the union; referees who have done excellent work during the season, and who have cheerfully kept all their appointments, no matter -what grade, and who" are looked upon by players and, public at being efficient referees .in 1 every detail. The Wellington Rugby Union has rewarded these gentlemen by. quietly, turning them down. I would be delighted to see the Canterbury Rugby. Union ask for a fuller list of referees' names, and the Wellington Rugby Union, do the right thing." The position as it exists at present is that a number of names, usually four, is selected by the Wellington Union's Appointment Board, and forwarded to any visiting team for selection. The board consists of a representative of the union, a representative of the Referees' Association, and a representative of the players. In the ease,of "big" matches, only the names of those referees who have not had a representative match during the season are considered and forwarded, so that all officials may have an opportunity of securing one of these coveted games'. This ■ course is held to bo specially desirable this season, whon the number of representative games to be played in Wellington is necessarily limited. As a matter of fact, the-Canterbury Union has already replied selecting Captain T. H. Jones as the referee for next Saturday's match.
Mr. W. S. Jones, who was Clerk of Court at Martony has been transferred to the Wellington Court, and lwa taken up tiis duties' as third clerk..
