JOSEPH CHALLENGED
THE ALLIES AND HUNGARY
MESSAGE TO BUDAPEST.
CItEUTER'S TELECRAM.I (Received August 25, 3 p.m.)
PARIS, 23rd August.
After hearing Mr Hoover, the Supreme Council sent a telegram to the Allied mission in Budapest, declaring that the Allies could not conclude a lasting peace with the Hungarian people as long as the existing Government, established by a coup d'etat, and carried out by a small group of police under the protection of a foreign army, remained in power. The Archduke Joseph saj's he is- ready to submit his position to a popular vote, but this will not satisfy the Council, as elections will be conducted under the auspices of his administration. Therefore, in the interests of the peace of Europe, the Allies are obliged to insist upon the present pretender to the supreme power in Hungary resigning, in order that a Government representative of all parties may be elected.
. It is officially/ announced that-300,000 French machinery plants have been identified in Germany. Restoration is procesding.
