CHILDREN'S DAY
oEVEN THOUSAND VIEW BATTLESHIP.
The children attending the various schools in and around ths city of Wellington paid a visit of inspection to H.M.S. fNew Zealand this afternoon. Altogether there were about 7000 children to see • over the ship, and the arrangements made \ worked very smoothly. The children ■ ivere brought to ' Post-office Square by •^ram-cars, and were then marched on to "the wharf by twos, the teachers being in I charge.-The children wore their school jjolours, and. all of them, even to the 'smallest, were enthusiastic over the-visit. I They boarded the vessel by the stern St. Margaret's and Wellington •Girls' Colleges leading the way, followed iby the children of the various State * schools'." "X route of march on the ship J had been arranged, and this gave the 'children: a fine chance of seeing the var.uous points of interest.. Men on board the ,:vessel were told off to the visitors ; round, and it was with evident pride -that they related to their ready hearers itlie history attaching to various points ,<jf the.shipi Haying seen all that was to "be seen, the children were marched' down /£he officers' -gangway into H shed, the Itse of which had been granted to the ■committee by the Harbour Board. Here >they were provided with light refresh,'ments, including soft drinks and sweets, :and the children of the Wellington "schools'will long have cause to remember "the occasion', the,.originators of which 'were the members of the Citizens' Entertainment ■ Committee. Mr. W ;H., Foster (headmaster of the Clyde-quay School) had charge of the arrangements, and he was ably assisted by members of the-Headmasters' Association and the teachers of the various schools.
