A SPORTS MEETING

.On Saturday last the residents of Newlands and district .celebrated peace by holding a sports programme, preceded by a plain and fancy dress procession for the school children. The procession formed at 10 a.m., and marched to the flagstaff, ■ where they saluted the natiutial flag. . Under the leadership of Mrs. Woods, the children sang , tie National Anthem and a verse of "0 God, Our Help in Ages Past," after standing in sibnee for a brief period, in honour of those who had fallen. Mr. F. Futter briefly addressed. the assemblage, referring to the importance of the great event which was being celebrated that day; Alter this ceremony, the procession moved along to Mr. Futter's paddock, at the entrance of which each child received a present. The fancy costumes and make-ups were all good. A cash prize of Ss was given, by Mr. F. Futtsr for the best dressed girl, and Mrs. Flitter gave a similar prize for boys. On a vote being taken, the prize for girls went to Miss May Kenny (Belgium), andl for boy to Master Bobbie Williams (Executioner). Some of the other most notable dresses wero worn by Miss h. Bowman (Peace), Miss D. Pritchard (Grandma), Miss H. Allison (Japanese), Miss L. Williams (Evening), Miss E. Barker (A Miss lit), Miss Phyllis Barker (Cowboy), Miss D. Futter (Gipsy), Little Daphne Joiner (France), Miss N. Hargreavea (Red Cross Nurse), Little Edna Woods (Nurso), Miss L. Jones (Milkmaid), Miss Pansy Woods (Japanese), and Miss Myrtle Kenny (Alsace). Among the boys, the most notable were Master Leslie Kenny

(Castaway), Master Roy Putter (Pirate), Master Charles Pritchard (Jockey). Mas-"' ter Arthur Barker (Topsy), Master Prank Har.greaves (Nigger), und Master Edward Bowman (Nigger).
