MUNICIPAL MATTERS

REMITS FOR CONFERENCE.

The remits to be moved on behalf of the Wellington City Council at the fourteenth annual conference of the New Zealand Municipal Association, to be held in Wellington, are as follow: —

Setting Back Frontages on Subdivision. —That section 117 of the Public Works Act, 1908, be repealed, or in the alternative that it be amended so as to give the council the right to approve of the dedication.—[Carried, in 1912 and 1914.] Hospital and Charitable Aid Boards.— That the_ present system of hospital administration, under which the Government and local bodies have to raise the mpney that is needed, and the boards, without any effective control or responsibility, are privileged to spend it, is highly unsatisfactory. That an amendment of the law is urgently required which will provide for the representation of the Government and local bodies on the boards in approximate proportion to their respective contributions. That the present system of .subsidy from the Consolidated Fund is arbitrary and .inequitable and should be placed- on a just and uniform basis.

Strips for Pedestrian Access.—That any city or large borough with the consent of the Governor-in-Cduncil shall have power to accept dedications of strips land for the purpose of giving pedestrians access from one street to another, and • those strips shall not in any way he considered as streets or treated as giving building frontages. ■ \ There is also a suggestion from Wei-, lington that there should be special legislation for the cities and larger boroughs on the ground that they require wider powers than the smaller boroughs. —This was referred by the Executive Committee to the conference.
