BREACH OF BYLAWS

A number of offenders against the city bylaws came before Mr. F. V. Frazsr, S. 51., yesterday.

Arthur Daniel Dineen explained that the three volt lamp in the tail light of his car had burnt but and that he had replaced it with.'a six-volt lamp as a makeshift, He admitted that the light was not altogether satisfactory. He was convicted on the charge of having insufficient light on his car, and ordered to pay costs.

Richard Evans was fined 5s and 7s costs for having left a motor-car unattended in Lambton-quay. William Henry Palmer was convicted on. a similar charge and ordered to pay 7s costs.

For allowing stock to wander, George William Bowes was fined £1 and 7s costs. Oliver Gardner 30s and 24s costs-in all in respect of two charges, and Stephen Stevens was convicted and ordered to pay 7s costs. Patrick Cavanagh, an old offender against the bylaw, appeared to answer two charges, one of allowing six cows to wander in Khandallah, and! the other of allowing a mob of fourteen- cows and a bull to wander at large. The ranger stated that actually more cattle were on the road than were mentioned in the informations, but he was unable to impound more than six on the first occasion and fifteen on the second. Defendant stated that the cattle had broken through a fence separating his land from' a neighbour's farm, and they were then driven on to the road by the neighbour. Defendant said that he had already paid £1 17s 6d damages to the neighbour, and had also paid poundage fees. A fine of £2, with 9s costs, was imposed: in regard to eaoh charge.
