OPENED IN WELLINGTON TO-DAY

The Wellington Provincial Conference of the New Zealand Farmers' Union opened in Wellington to-day at the conference' hall, Farmers' Institute. Formerly the conference has been held in country ■ centres, and the departure made this year was apparently welcomed by delegates, who were able to meet in comfort under the best conditions,' instead of being. crowded in a small hall hastily prepared for the occasion. The President, Mr. G. L. Marshall, of Marton, presided, and there was an attendance of about 75 delegates, representing branches throughout the Wellington Provincial District.

In his presidential address, Mr. Marshall said it gave him much pleasure to welcome the delegates. " This year we. meet in our own building, and it is satisfactory to think that the farmers have been far sighted enough to build such a splendid central meeting-place, where the interests of the farming community can be concentrated. Our own company, the Farmers' Distributing Company, is already established here, and our Dominion secretary, Mr. Jack, must feel he is now under the- parent, roof." The remainder of Mr. Marshall 'address, which touched on important matters of general interest, is reported under separate headings. Sir , James Wilson, President of ,'the Dominion Farmers' Conference, .welcomed delegates to . the ; new ■ Farmers' Institute. The object in erecting an institute was to provide a building which would place all farmers' interests under one roof, and to provide a common meeting centre'for the fanning community. The Institute' Company was particularly fortunate in securing a freehold section in a- central position. He fully outlined the welfare of the Institute Company. *
