SEASON OPENED,
Tha opening of the Rugby League football season found a fair following of supporters at No. 2 ground, Petone, where Athletic met the local team. For the first game of the season a fairly good exhibition was given by the players "of each team, and an even contest resulted, Athletic winning by a margin of .three points. Among those playing for Petone was Tancred, who has previously been a prominent Rugby player. Tries for the winners were secured_ by Wilson1, Les.' CampbeU ; and 'Warring, while Weaver and Warring each converted one.' Warring's try was.a brilliant piece of work. Securing .■ the ball at full-back, he took it up; the field, and, kicking high, managed to follow up in time to smother the attempt to save, and gaining possession again he eluded the opposition and scored in. a good position, adding the major points by a fine kick. Tancred and Duncan, scored for Betone, one try being converted by Whitley, who also potted a goal. The final score was : Athletic 13, Petone 10. Mr. A. White was the referee. .
