Infantry and cavalry reinforced the gendarmerie to prevent the May Day demonstrators marching to the Place dela Concorde. Firemen turned the fire-hoses on the crowd, which twice broke through the military cordons. Many heads were broken in baton charges.
Another riotous crowd gathered at the Place de Longera and shouted "Down with the Government!"
The outlook was uglier at nightfall, and the riots were continued at night. The demonstrators attempted to barricade the- streets, but mounted troops charged the mob. A great number were wounded, including Deputy Cachin, editor of L'Humanite, and" a prominent councillor.
