A GREAT MEMORIAL

TO. BE BUILT AT BRUGES CANAL.

The' Anglo-Belgian Union, of London, desiring to commemorate the heroic landing of the British forces 'on. .the -Mole at Zeebrugga and the blocking of the Bruges* Canal, has decided to promote 'a competition for i a memorial worthy,_ of that historic 'achievement. The initiative ■ has come from the Town Council of Bruges, with which the uhjon ie ow-operating. It -is hoped that the union will have at its disposal for the erection of the memorial a sum of £30,000. . It is . intended that the . memorial should take the form of a monument ■erected on the western side of the entrance to the Bruges Canal. As it is desired that- the monument should be visible at sea for a considerable distance, it is'tovbe. conceived on a I large scale, and the' height is not to bo less than sevjfcty-five feet from the ground line. The material" to be used ■' must"be granite, or granite and.bronze. The competition, which is to be ppen, to all architects and sculptors of British and Belgian birth, competing either separately or jn . epllaboratiou... -It-is pointed out that the following incidents would all be fitting subjects for cprariiemoration: —"The .Storrping of --the Mole";' "The Blocking of. the. Canal Entrance,";: "The' Blowing up of' the . Viaduct"; "The Rescue of the Blockship Crews" ; '"Mo Co-operation .of Aircraft"; "The Smoke Screens used by Naval Graft." Prizes will be awarded to the best designs as follow:—First prize, commission and execution of memorial; second, £150; third,,;S7)>; and fourth, £50.
