RECORD DURING THE. WAR
A recent ' cablegram to Australiin papers states_ that the annual report in connection with the Rhodes Scholarships shows that only nine, scholars were in residence during 1918. Of these four had previously been on active service, and two had been medically rejected. There were also in residence 15 holders of overset— scholarships granted by the Rhodes Trn_ and certain other bodiea.
Twenty Rhodes scholars and former Rhodes scholars wer» killed during 1918. Included in this number were six South Africans, two Australasians, and one Canadian.
Military honours were' awarded to 28, including seven South Africans, nine Aust_Ja__s, and nine Canadians.
Of the 50 scholars elected for 1917, 46 took military service. Two were medically rejected, but were accepted for G^vernmenfc'^tf&rk instead; and two were otherwise employed. The election of scholars will be resumed next October, when it is hoped that the completion of demobilisation will enable intending candidates in the army to compete:
