REDEEMING LIBERTY BONDS

An interesting fact, which was mentioned in tha last report of Mr. MAdoo, secretary to the United States Treasury, prior to his retirement from that office, was that down to Ist November last the Treasury had purchased in the open market £48,807,300 worth of bonds, face value, for £45,852,000, or an average of about 96 per cent. Another fact, which is stated in the report, is that Liberty bonds buyers evinced ho eagerness to take advantage of the opportunity to convert earlier issues into bonds bearing a higher rate of interest. Thus of tha first Liberty loan, which was a 3j per cent, operation, only £113,664,000 was exchanged for 4's ; and of the second Liberty loan, 4's, only £308,332,200 was converted into 4i-'s.
