THE TURF

NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By "Sir Lancelot.")

The purchase of Kilbroney for the Waikanae Stud should be well received by breeders throughout the Dominion. He wa3 foaled in 1907, and as he has proved a stud success he cannot be regarded as a dear horse at. 40GO guineas. At the Yaldhurst clearing sale Multiform, then fourteen years old, brought 3750 guineas. At the previous Elderslie dispersal sale, held in 1912, Charlemagne 11. fetched 2500. Better prices have been realised for stallions in Australia. At the Segenhoe (N.S.W.) sale Tressady brought 6030 guineas, and at ""the Shipley (Vie.) Stud sale Comedy King brought 7300 guineas. The recent sale did not get so much paper publicity as previous ones,- otherwise higher prices would no doubt have been realised. After Kilboy won the A.J.C. Derby Kilbroney could have been sold for a much higher figure than he brought, at auction, but Mr. Beid decided to hold on. So far the writer has never heard of anyone making a fortune breeding horses. The late Mr. G. G, Stead, a keen business vrnan, probably did well, but ho was an exception. He knew the value of advertising, and some of the Yaldhurst lots, sold in 1908, were sold by the pound,, as it were. Appended is the result of the sales of the principal studs since then :—

Gs. Yaldhurst Staid (G. G. Stead) ... 41,815 Segenhoe,, N.S.W. (W. Brown)' 38,217 Shipley, Vie. (Sol. Green) 31,246 Elderslie (J. B. Reid), 1919 . . 22,570 Elderslie, ,1912 : 19,025

The Otaki-trained Winder was /successful.at both the Gisborne. and Poverty Bay Meetings. Wonder is a four-year-old bay mare by Camp Fire-^Ceeile (Gold Reef—Puwerewere), and is a halfsister to Lady Moutoa, a Hawkes Bay 'Cup winner, and Sir Moutoa. Ceeile also produced two sisters to the last named, and a full brother to Wonder, a year older, but none.of them gained any distinction on the turf.

Cambridge's name'was sent through as an acceptor for five events at the Taumarunui Meeting, which must surely be a record. • He was successful in the Ma. tapuna Handicap, and will have,to put up 71b extra in the'Otorohanga Handicap at Te Kuiti on Saturday next. Cambridge is a four-year-old gelding~by Flagfall (sire of Paddington Green) from Iridescence, by Muskapeer—Golden Shine, by St; Leger—Young Polish, by Feve— Polish. , Ladybird, dam 'of Lottie, a Thompson Handicap winner, belongs to the Day and Martin family, being a full sister to Polish.

. Hythread (Hymettus—Gold Thread) met a weak field in the Welter Handicap at Poverty Bay on Saturday, and scored a long-overdue win in the Welter Handicap. Hythread is bred the right way to go fast, and was rather a smart two and' three year old, but had not won since the Grand National Meeting last

The stakes on offer at the Taumarunui Meeting are very poor compared with those given by Auckland country clubs. There is only one event over the value of 100 soys to the winner. In five races the winner's end of the stake is only 40 soys.

At the Gisborne Meeting' Want failed to concede Con 121b. They met on level terms at Poverty Bay on Saturday, when Want managed to reverse positions with his opponent. A. B. Webster' won four races at the East, Coast Meetings. - Monopole, who scored' two ;'wins at Taumarunui on Saturday last, is a four-year-old gelding by Monoform—Postscore, a Victorian-bred mare■• by Postmaster (son of sanic). He is engaged in the Te Kumi Handicap, six furlongs, at Te Kuiti on Saturday next, and will have to put up 71b extra. After running second at Gisborne on Thursday and second to Sheila earlier in the day, Sea Lord scored a long overdue win in the Farewell Handicap at Poverty Bay on Saturday. He had not scored a win for over two years—since he- defeated Menelaus in the Railway Handicap at Woodville. -, ■' ■

Adjutant was. engaged in two events on tho opening day of the Dunedin Meeting, but after 'his-? defeat at Methven he was allowed to, drop out of. both. Heathercote will represent the Chokebore Lodge stable in the Dunedin Cup and Lionskin in the Publicans': Handicap. Whitehall, winner of the Maiden Handicap at Taumarunui on Saturday last, is a five-year-old gelding <by Marble Arch —Zinnia. ■ He was engaged! in a similar class of event at. Te Kuiti on Saturdaynext, but is not now eligible, to compete. With Wonder and Lord Muskery, first and second in the Maiden Scurry at Gisborne, out <ti the Maiden Race at Poverty Bay, it pointed- to Starglow (Martian—Fire Queen), but she could only again get third to Aire, who was one of the least fancied at- Gisborne, where Starglow started favourite. Aire is one of Mr. G. D. Greenwood's breeding, by Danube— ; Nautiloid . (Musketry— Nautilus). ■ Aire ,is a half-sister to Pilgrim's Way, Oarolus, Ogier, and other performers. •■• . . -
