HYDRO-ELECTRIC DEVELOPMENT
PUBLIC MEETING .AT *OAMARU.

OAMARU, Bth February. A largely-attended public meeting representative of the town and country, districts of North Otago was' held to-day to discuss hydro-electric development, particularly as affecting the South -Island. Local M.P.'s and visitors from neighbouring districts were the principal speakers. It was finally decided: "That, this meeting of North Otago residents", realising the importance of obtaining ample supplies of electricity for ■ industries and. commercial and domestic pur-, poses for the whole district, resolves to take all the necessary-steps to urge-the Government to complete a hydro-electric scheme for the Dominion in genera], and this district in particular."
..- A committee of twelve members equally ■ representative of "town 'and; country, with the members for Oamaru and W;titaki, the Mayors of Oamaru and Hampden, and. the chairman of the Waitaiti County Council as members ex-offifcio, was set up. The meeting enthusiastically supported the demand for a hydroelectric scheme for the South Island, with a powerful central station ia Otago.
