WITH THE RIFLE

LOCAL TEAMS' CHAMPIONSHIP

. i The Wellington -EiJHc Clubs' Union hiild their senior championship teams' match at the Miramar range on Saturday afternoon; when four teams, representing the petone, Karori, Suburbs, and Old Navals Rifle Clubs competed. The hope Of fine shooting-weather was not realised, and before the shooting at the 300 yards range was completed the wind had .freshened considerably. As a result many promising scores were spoilt at one. or other.of the two longer distances. The Karori team, in the first stage established a lead of IS points -from thy .Petone Club, the Old Navals being third, while, the, "Suburbs team,, which was looked upon to ' make a good showing, dropped 33 points behind the leaders. , The Old Navals commenced well at 500 yards with scores of .32 and 34 by Rfhnii. Franklyn and Standidge respectively, the latter having 56 to his credit for.the. two distances.. It was quite on the ctirds at this stage that' tho Old Navals team, which 'has not hitherto shown to good •■ advantage in championship competitions,, might fire i-t-3 way into first place. The team completed the. range .with a score four, points tetter than the Karori's, but the latter still held aleadjof 16 on the two distances. The Petone team had meanwhile dropped to third place. .At the concluding range the first two man down for Karori—viz., Burns and Haliiday— gave their team .a further advance, and left little room for doubt as to the final result. The conditions . here were very difficult and-some promising . individual scores were wrecked. With a grand total of 834..points .Karori won-comfortably by 46 points from the.Suburbs team, which had come through, quietly in the late stages from last place and headed Petone by one point. The latter team fired throughout with five emergencies, and its performance was applauded by the other team's. At ;thc conclusion' of the match President Babe. (ch;tirman of the union's executive) expressed the union's' thanks, to Mr. H. Hawthorne, who had acted as range officer for-the match. Messrs. W. Cowan and J. M'Donald, who supervised the marking in-the trench, also, earned the competitors' appreciation of their valuable work. The tmionls trophy for the highest, indiviual'score w_s won by Rfrarn. J. Burns
