SCHOOL HOLIDAYS
. A perennial complaint of parents is being made now with , ; regard to the differences in school-opening dates. Some private schools have already commenced the first term of the year; the State schools reopen on Tuesday, and the 'secondary schools later in the week. That is not so bad; but vrhere the difference is really inconvenient is in the term holidays during the year. The arrangement, or really lack of arrangement, is such that parents having children at primary and secondary schools find it impossible to plan any change of scene ana air for their families. Before the secondary scholars are released the younger children must be back at school.' This, in many cases, defeats the main purpose of the holidays, for removal to the seaside or the country is impossible under such conditions. The question is asked: Why cannot the terms be made uniform? There appear to be no outstanding difficulties. Possibly the Education Department could fix the terms for all schools, public and private. Failing that, it is suggested that a conference of the various authsriiies should be abl« to remove the source of complaint. '
