FOCH AND HIS CROSS.
There are not many stories of Marshal Foch, said Father Bernard Vaugban, preaching at Farm-street Church recently, but he proceeded to tell this one:— "Ono day when warming to talk with his Jesuit brother he is reported to havo said: 'I know something about preparation for war, about formation and concentration, and I can follow up an advantage ; but victory - does not depend on me.
"Then drawing from his tunic a little crucifix hanging from a twist of twine tho Marshal continued, 'There, nailed to tho Cross, is the Giver of Victory. Our triumph must come if we trust in Him.' "After the victory of the Marne tho Bishop thanked Foch. 'Monseigneur,' replied the General, 'thank not me, but Him who mado use of me.' "
