FRUIT PRICES

GROWERS ASK PENNY A POUND.

While the Board of Trade was in Nelson it roceived_ a largo deputation, of fruitgrowers with reference to tho price of fruit cases and the increase in the cost of timber for frtiit cases and generally. The board was able to inform tbe orchardiats that a reduction had been made in the price of white pine, an<l provided more red pine could bo used for cases, a further reduction in the price of cases could be looked for. Another deputation, /also of growers, interviewed the board on the price of fruit. It was asked that tho board should consider proposals as to ensuring fair prices from fruit, in view of the shortage of the crop generally. It was suggested that the price of fruit throughout the Dominion should be fixed in the interests of both grower and consumer. It was indicated at the meeting that the majority of the growers in t£e Nelson district would be quite satisfied with a return of Id per lb for thair fruit at the orchardu

The board requested that a meeting of representative growers in the Nelson district should be hold to discuss proposals and formulate a scheme that the board could submit to the Government. If such a scheme were endorsed by tho growers themsebves, then the board would go into the matter on the spot some time next month.
