BRITISH ADVANCE
AN EXTRAORDINARY SPECTACLE
PEOPLE WELCOME THE ARMY
DELIVERERS, NOT CONQUERORS.
(UNITSD. PRESS ASSOCIATION.—COfTMfiHT.) CABS. AND N.I. CAMJf ASSN. AND RIDTSR.I (Received December 10, 8.45 a.m.) LONDON, 9th December. A 'correspondent who is accompanying the British advance on Cologne says: It has been an extraordinary spectacle, the inhabitants generally welcoming the men of the army as deliverers rather than conquerors, and as ensuring pro-' tection against the revolutionaries' lawlessness and pillage. The people have a pronounced preference for British troops, and this indicates a feaT lest the French and Belgians will retaliate for the outrages perpetrated in their countries. This fear is groundless, as the behaviour of the French and the Belgians is proving to be exemplary.
