RAILWAY PAY

In reply to Mr." It. A. Wright, who asked whether the Railways Department would give more than half-pay to men affected by the epidemic, the Minister said to-day, that he would be quite prepared to consider representations if they came through the right quarter (the A.S.R.S.). In answer to Mr. Veitch, the Minister said the department could not give priority of consideration to locomotive drivers or any other section of the workers. The claims of the men would be considered as a whole.

At a meeting of the Engine-drivers, Firemen, and Cleaners' Association, held at Upper Hutt yesterday, the following resolution was passed : "That this branch ■views with alarm the departure of the leaders of the National Government from Ne\v Zealand before any settlement of its grievances has been arrived at, and calls on the -executive council to come to.an early decision as to what steps it intends %o take."
