COMPENSATION FOR COUNTRY HOTELS.

Messrs. R. W. Smith (Waimarino), Forbes (Hurunui), E. Newman (Eangitikei), and Jennings (Taumarunui) pleaded the case of the country hotels which would lose their licenses, and would be entitled only up to 60 per cent, of the value of land and buildings by way of compensation, whereas in city hotels where the depreciation was not bo great, as' the buildings could be used for industrial purposes, SO per cent, was allowed. Mr. Jennings stated that the majority of these hotels were of no value as accommodation houses if they were deprived of their licenses. The Prime Minister said he would move to increase the possible compensation to 70 per cent. The House agreed to this.
