WASHINGTON, 6th December, j Continuing his evidence before the j Senate Committee inquiry into pro-Ger-nian activities Mr. Bielaski said that j Bernstorff's message recommending, Hale's selection, mentioned that Hearst , did not know Hale as a paid German, agent. David Starr Jordan, of Stanford University, protested against the inclusion of his name in Bemstorff's list of those favourable to Germany's cause. The only time he ever communicated with Bernstorff was when be forwarded an Australian lady's protect against German atrocities. Mr. Bielaski produced a message from Bernstorff to Berlin explaining that it -was impossible to make proGerjnan propaganda successful in the United States, because it was impos- | sible to keep secret the fact that newspapers had been bribed, and because the Lasitania was sunk.
