YACHT RACING
The first "points" races of the Port Nicholson Yacht Club were held on Saturday. The day waa marked by a fresh breeze amounting to a. gale in the squalls. Tho Viola, with Commodore W. Duncan at the helm, won the first claeti race in fine style. The Rona started late, but was ably handled by Mr. A. J. Petheriok, and no doubt had it riot been for her late start she would bavo led the floet home. The finish of the first class race waa most interesting, the old Waitangi, coming along ,in third place and rapidly overhaulingthe yachts a.head of her. Sho znueb lia-v© been travelling; nine knots or more coming across Evans Bay in her approach to the finishing line. "The Marangi did not start. With the handicap* at th« start the first boat home was tho winner. The handicaps and times of arrival were as follow: — First Class Race. Viola (handicap 25min), arrived at 4hr 56mJn 30sec, 1; Rona (19sec), 4min 59eec, 2; Waitangi (scratch), shr lmin 30sec, 3;■ Atalanta (17min), shr 6min, 4; Kotiri (16min), shr 17min, 5. | Second Class Race. The second class race was won by the Rawene. In heavy weather she is a very difficult boat to beat; and she waa well handled by Mr. F. Kiernan. The handicaps and finishing times were as follow: — Raweno (handicap lOmin) arrived 4hr 51sec, 1; Galatea. (6cr), shr 4min 30seo, 2; Venus (3min), shr Brain, 3; Wairere (2rain), shr 21mjn, 4; lolanthe (4rnin), shr 25min, 5. The third class race was abandoned, only one yacht being on the line at starting time. Tho heavy weather no doubht kept the Evans Bay boats at home. Mr. J. Gendall filled the office of judge, starter, and timekeeper. A crpwd of between two and three hundred people watched the starts and fini&hee from the Clyde-quay wharf,
