THE WELLINGTON CLUB

A further batch of outstanding games in the above club's championship tourney have been disposed of as follows:—Purchas (1) v. W. Mackay (0), Purchas (1) v. S. Gyles (0), Barnes (1) v. G. P. Anderson (0), and James (£) v. Gbdtschalfc: •(£). The position of the loaders is now ss follows:— • ■

The play-off between Messrs. Davies and Mason to decide the above tie was concluded last week. Mason won the fourth game, and Davies scored the fifth (in which Mason declined the king's gambit, and lost two pawns through a faulty move in the early stages). Davie* thus won the club championship, having scored three games to Mason's one. (The third game of the series ended in a draw and did not count). By winning both tha club's 1918 tonrneys (handicap and championship) Davies has scored the same "double" that Mr. G. P. Anderson recently secured in the South Wellington Club, and that Mr. J. C. Grierson has just scored in Auckland. Including two games played in telegraphic ■ matches, Daviee has this year put up the fine club record of 29 wins, 4 draws, and 1 loss— the sole reverse being the fourth game in the play-off with Mason, referred to above. He well deserved the ronnd of applause accorded him by the twenty players present at the conclusion of the match on Saturday evening.,
