BY-ELECTION

WELLINGTON SOUTH THREE NOMINATIONS. Nominations for the Wellington South By-election, caused by the death of Mr. A. H. Hindmarsh, closed at noon to-day. The following nominations were received by the Returning Officer, Mr. J. E. F. Perry: — George Frost, nominated by Joseph William Backhouse, Sydney H. Underwood, G. W. Key, A. A. Whitelaw. Robert Semple, nominated by H. E. Holland, J. Barras, R. W. Ballanfcyne, and George E. Odlin. John Castle, nominated by J. Harold Kemp, Mary Read, Henry James Roll, William Wylie, James Embury, J.P., Edgar C. Faltham, Alfred Temple Perkins, Ernest Alfred Eyres. Mr. George Frost is one of the oldest and. best-known members of the City Council. His chief work in that con, nection has been carried out in his position as Chairman of the Reserves Committee, which he has made his particular sphere of civic usefulness. He is a valuer by occupation, an old resident of Brooklyn, and one who has done yeoman service in connection with the development of the city. He was for several years a member, of the Molrose Borough Council, and for three years Mayor of that borough. After the amalgamation of Melrose with tho city he was elected to the City Council, and haa been a member oi that body foi thirteen years. Mr. R. Semple, the chosen candidate of the Labour Party, is miners' agent, and was the original organiser for the Federation of Labour, now the United Federation of Labour. He is well known as a forceful exponent of the views of Labour, in whoee cause he has made himself prominent as a fearless and outspoken advocate.

Mr. Castle has been prominent *in local Government affairs for a number of years. He has taken a particular interest in matters connected with the Wellington Zoo, and in his capacity as a member of the City Council has proved himself, a man of judgment and initiative.

Electors who desire to assist Mr. Castle in his candidature are requested to hand in their names to Miss Castle, 129, Riddiford-street.

A meeting of supporters of the Labour Party and candidate will be held in Brooklyn to-night and Newtown onTuesday.

Mr. A. A. Whitelaw, on account- of health reasons, has decided not to comply with a request that he should be a candidate for Wellington South.
