THE BY-ELECTIONS
FIXED FOR 19th DECEMBER. Both the Palmerston North and the Wellington South by-elections are to be held next Thursday week, 19th Decem* ber. In each case nominations will close at noon next Monday. As the rolls will close at 6 o'clock tonight there has been quite a rush of claims for enrolment at the office of the Returning Officer for Wellington South (Mr. J. E. F. Perry), Newtown Library building. Mr. Perry will remain m attendance until 6 p.m.
The announcement in The Post yesterday that polling in connection with the Wellington South vacancy would probably take place on the 19th instant wae received in Labour circles with considerable astonishment, as it was expected that the election would not be held until a much later date. The Labour Representation Committee had fixed its ballot for the selection of its candidate for Tuesday next, but as a new situation has arisen it was necessary to bring the voting off earlier, and the ballot was opened at the committee rooms, Brooklyn, and the committee room in the Trawmay Union office, Newtown, at 2 o'clock this afternoon, and will go on until 9 p.m. If necessary it will be continued at the same place 3 to-morrow, between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. Following are the nominations received by the Labour Representation Committee:—Mr. T. Brindle (nominated by the Social Democratic Party) ; Mr. A. L. Monteith (Soft Goods and Storemen's Unions); Mr. J. Read. (Engine-drivers' TTnton); Mr. M. J. Reardon (Wellington Trades and Labour Council) j Mr. R. Semple (Brooklyn and Wellington South branches of New Zealand Labour Party and Tramways Union); Mr. W. T. Young (Painters' Union).
