A CONSPIRACY CASE

(IT TILKSRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.) CHRISTCHURCH, 6th Dec. An almost incredible tala of gullibility was unfolded before Mr. Bailey, S.M., when Arthur Patrick M'Guire, Janot M'Ouire (his wife); C«cil Charles M'Cullough, and Frederick John Wonnald were charged with conspiring to defraud W. J. Cupples of £194 4s between December, 1915, and 29th October, 1918. Charges of obtaining this amount by. false pretences were withdrawn. Detective-Sergeant M'llveney, who conducted the prosecution, stated that Cuppks, whilst working at Mount M»gdala Homo, had become enamoured of one of the female inmates, and he endeavoured to obtain her release through the M'Guires, who produced two alleged Scotland Yard detectives, Wormald and M'Cullough, for the purpose. Cupples had paid over the money on tho assumption that it was being used for the purpose of releasing the woman. When arrested in the North Island, Wonnald and M'Cullough had admitted connection with the matter. The evidence having been heard, Mr. Hunter submitted that a wife was not liable to be brought in guilty of conspiracy with her husband. The point was upheld, and the female accused was dischargee). The others pleaded not guilty, and were committed for trial, bail being allowed.
